Upgrading your iPhone? Tips for a Smooth Transition

Upgrading your iPhone

Whenever Apple releases a new iPhone model, millions of people rush to buy it. New models have the benefit of wider screens and higher resolutions. Their battery runs for more hours and gives users a deeper immersive experience.

A lot of people may decide to sell their old phone or give it to someone. You should be careful with your data, accounts, contacts, and passwords that you have already saved in your old phone. When you are preparing to buy another phone, understand what to do before upgrading iPhone.

Update your old iPhone

Updating your iPhone ensures it has the latest software versions. It increases speed and strengthens the phone’s security. With a faster working phone, your process of switching to a new iPhone becomes smoother. The steps for updating your phone are simple.

  •  Open Settings
  • Scroll down to the General icon
  • Open the Software Update Icon. If there is an update available, tap update. Once the update is complete, restart the phone.

When getting ready to switch to a new iPhone, you should be keen to create a backup for your contacts. When erasing all data, your phone will erase everything including your contacts. To be safe, transfer contacts from iPhone to Mac or iCloud.

You might not be sure how to sync my contacts to my MacBook, but the process is not complicated. Tap on the System Preferences icon and then iCloud. Select all contacts and sync them to Mac. Understanding how to import contacts to Mac will ensure the contacts lists you have built for many years are not lost once you reset your old phone.

Logout of any personal apps

Some apps contain sensitive and personal information such that it is better to sign them out before continuing. Apart from the system apps, check other app s that you might have installed. They may include your online banking apps, e-wallets, trading apps, and password storage apps. It is safer to move them to your new iPhone when logged out.

Create a backup of your old iPhone

You can now backup all your data and apps before changing iPhones. Backups improve your data security and reliability. Once you prepare your new iPhone, you can easily load the data into it. There are several ways to create a backup.

Backup to iCloud. Tap WIFI on and open the phone’s settings. Select your name or account profile. Tap on the iCloud icon and then iCloud Backup. Tap on the Backup Now icon and wait for the process to complete. This process will back up all the content that you have on your phone.

Backup to Mac. Create a folder on a Mac or any other computer and give it a name. Connect your old iPhone to your computer and drag and drop all the files that you want to back up.

Email backup. You may also upload all your data by email. Log in to your email account and select all the files that you want to back up. Upload them via email and wait until the attaching process is completed.

Reset the old iPhone

As you prepare for the new iPhone, get ready to reset your old phone. Resetting means cleaning the phone of all your data by erasing everything. This process resets the phone and makes it ready for the next user to set their preferences. You will get signed out of your Apple ID and all current settings will be erased. To do this, open the phone Settings icon gear. Scroll to the General icon. Open the Erase All Content and Settings.

Restore backup to your new iPhone

Prepare and set up your new phone by following the setup prompts. Set your email account, new Apple ID, and security settings. Once the process is complete, get ready to restore your backup. The restoration processes are different depending on where you had saved your backup. If you have saved on iCloud, use your Apple ID to sign in to your iCloud account.

Open iCloud and select ‘Restore from iCloud Backup’. If the backup was on a Mac, connect the new iPhone to the Mac using Bluetooth or USB cable. Send all the data to the new phone. If you saved in email, sign in to your email account on your phone. Download all the backup data into the phone storage and just wait for the process to be over.

Conclusion

Upgrading your iPhone gives you access to new features and fresh user experience. The new phone will have a greater speed, an excellent display, and larger storage. Before you give away or sell your old iPhone, make sure you protect your data. Move it to iCloud and log out from your trading, banking apps, and e-wallets. Go to factory settings and erase all data. This process ensures the next owner of your old iPhone will not have access to your data.
